Nicola NICKLEBY (1870-1956)

Nicola Nickleby croppedAn unexpected choice for this anthology, perhaps, as Miss Nickleby would be regarded by most as a minor writer, writing mainly for Victorian magazines.  But her inclusion is justified, I claim, if for no other reason than that she was my great-grandmother.  Having lost her husband in the Boer War she saw her daughter, my grandmother, give birth to my mother in the Great War of 1914-18, then saw me born in the Second.  An anthology of her more romantic stories was published in 2015, soon followed by a reissue of her novel, We Never Shall Marry.
